Company Information

Everything you ever wanted to know, but nothing you needed to know.

The year: 1997.  The device: A US Robotics Pilot 1000.  From that simple device sprang forth the idea that it would be cool to make games.  And thus was born Seahorse Software.  The first offering from us came in the form of Pyramid Solitaire, originally released in November 1997.  Who knew that this simple game would propel us to where we are today?  Ok, maybe the fact that is was free had something to do with it.  But seriously, how many games have you heard of people playing so much that they wore down spots on their screens?  That is how devoted Pyramid fans were.  And they were a competitive bunch too, the Best Scores page was constantly in flux as people battled with each other to see their name in the #1 spot.


After Pyramid Solitaire, we ventured into the shareware realm with Euchre being released in February of 1998.  This odd game, where you only play with part of a standard deck has become one of the most loved, and most hated games in our collection.  People love it for it’s simplicity, but also hate it because the computer partner tends to do stupid things from time to time.  But is still remains one of our strongest selling programs.


Quickly on the heals of Euchre in February 1998, we released 4Corners Solitaire.  This helped to cement that we were  a provider of the not-so-common solitaire games.  Oh sure, we could have done the typical Klondike Solitaire and Freecell, and become rich beyond our wildest dreams, but hey why would be deprive you the customer of such gems like Pyramid and 4Corners?


To prove that we were crazy indeed (for not doing Klondike and Freecell), we created Crazy 8’s and released it in September of 1998.  This childhood game is the basis of the commercial game we all know-and-love, Uno.  Pesky things like trademarks and copyrights kept us from doing a full fledged Uno game, but our Crazy 8’s has it own charm.  Switch on the Special Cards and you get to blast people with Draw 2’s, Draw 4’s, Draw Bombs, and many other vicious cards.  And despite the plea’s of one of our beta testers, we never implemented the Hot Death Uno cards/rules.  Yes, we do listen to our customers/beta testers, but we wanted to keep this a family game.


March, April, and May of 1999 saw the release of Montana Solitaire, BlackJack Solitaire, and Rummy respectively.  BlackJack Solitaire is actually the result of a really good beta tester coming to us and asking if we would write this game that he kept wasting quarters on in a bar.  Well, we did (see, we listen to customers!), and it became another huge hit!  The competitive sides in people really come out with this game.


From there we have released many other Palm OS games through the years.  Some odd-ball solitaire games, and some of our own creations.  Ludo was our first venture into the board game realm.  The strange name was once again due to trademark/copyright issues as Ludo is what Trouble and Sorry are all based on.


Now enter 2008.  A shiny device has captured the attention of the world and this company.  That device is the Apple iPhone.  When Apple announced that companies could create programs for this new whiz-bang device, our hearts here at Seahorse Software skipped a beat.  We once again felt that long-missed excitement of developing for a device.  So we decided that we would offer some of our existing games and new ones (eventually) for the iPhone and iPod touch.  The first program we released was BlackJack Run.  This is actually just a spiffier name for that ultra-competitive Palm OS game of BlackJack Solitaire we released in 1999.  How did we decide to move BlackJAck Run first?  Darts; possible.  Random luck; probably.  The quickest/easiest to move over to the new platform; definitely.  We must say that we are extremely pleased with the new version, and are looking forward to adding some iPhone/iPod touch specific features to it.


So that is the company history in a nutshell.  We plan on continuing to support our Palm OS programs, and develop new and exciting programs for iPhone/iPod touch devices.  We have accomplished a lot since 1997, and see no end in sight!
